Selecting the Best Shower Water Filter

Tap water usually contains chlorine and other impurities that you don’t want touching your skin!

Fortunately, shower water filters do a fantastic job purifying the water. Invest a little time in choosing one and we promise you’ll notice the difference!

How Do Shower Water Filters Work?

Shower filters are units that are attached to your shower head. When water is pushed through them, it passes through different mediums that remove chlorine, contaminants, and even sometimes alters the water’s pH level.

Types Of Shower Water Filters

Multi-level Carbon Filters

Multi-level carbon filters push water through different levels. At each level, water is purified further. Usually, the first step is a mechanical process where water passes through a tightly woven cotton layer that catches debris, rust, and large viruses and bacteria.

The water then passes through a chemical process that softens it and then it passes through the activated carbon layer. This layer will eliminate lots of chemicals like chlorine and other volatile organic compounds.

KDF Filters

KDF filters work using an electrical-chemical charge that we can’t notice. The way it works is that the charge caused by copper and zinc in the filter changes the structure of chlorine making it water soluble.

This filter also removes other heavy metals like lead, mercury, and copper.

Vitamin C Filters

Vitamin C filters are the best at removing chlorine and chloramine from the water. So if these two components are mostly present in your water, then this filter type is the one for you.

The tubes of vitamin C inside these filters cause a chemical reaction that changes chlorine and chloramine making them harmless.

Benefits Of Using A Quality Shower Water Filter

When you shower, you want to make sure that the water running over the largest organ of your body is clean and pure.

Yes, we’re talking about your skin!

Healthier showers

As you shower, your skin may absorb some of the substances from the water and you may also inhale the vapor when the water is too hot. Using a water filter means that the water you expose your body to is cleaner and healthier.

Better Hair And Skin

Say goodbye to dry skin and frizzy hair. Using pure water helps keep your skin and hair naturally moisturized.

Improved Smell

We’ve all felt like we’re showering a swimming pool at least once, haven’t we?

Water filters remove chlorine and as a result, you’ll end up with more pleasant smelling water.

4 Things To Look For When Buying a Shower Water Filter

1) Type Of Filtration

Let’s agree that there isn’t one single filter that can get rid of 100% of the harmful substances in your water because different filters remove different contaminants. Your best shot is to actually try to identify what’s in your water and buy a filter accordingly.

The easiest way to find out which contaminants are present in your water is through consumer confidence reports from your local water utility.

2) Lifespan

Of course, filters don’t last forever. Usually, most filters have a lifespan of around six months.

Although the lifespan stated by the manufacturer should give you an idea on how often you should change the filter, it doesn’t provide an accurate measure because it really depends on how much water was filtered during that period of time.

The more often the filter is used, the more frequently it’ll need to be changed.

3) Replacement

Before you buy a specific filter, you want to make sure that finding the replacement cartridge is easy and affordable. Otherwise, you’ll have to spend a lot of money to buy a new set each time!

4) Certification

Now to the real deal! We can’t stress enough how important certifications are. When a filter is NSF certified, it means it has passed through the strict procedures imposed by the National Sanitation Foundation. That way you can be sure that the filter purifies water as it should.
