Selecting the Best Survival Shovel

To find the best survival shovels, you have to consider what you’ll be needing it for first. Since survival shovels are very practical and can be used for several purposes, it’s vital to determine why you’re shopping for one to narrow down your options and find the most convenient shovel for you. Apart from it being a digging hole, survival shovels can do much more and is a piece of crucial equipment in survival situations.

  • Digging
  • Self-defense
  • Shoveling mud or snow
  • Construction work
  • Camping
  • Cutting wood

You should also keep in mind that every job requires a specific shovel, so the more generalized your needs are, the less functional your shovel will be. Luckily, the new multi-purpose shovels available these days have solved this dilemma for you.

So instead of having to carry different selections of shovels to meet each need, the new multi-purpose shovels have been designed to help you survive with very impressive features. There are still a few factors that need to be considered before going shovel shopping:

Shovel Strength and Material

One of the main functions of a shovel is to help you dig. Whether you’ll be digging into snow, mud or even solid dirt, you need to make sure that shovel blade is powerful enough to penetrate and withstand the pressure of use. The blade should be made of rock-hard metal and shouldn’t be thin and bendy. Best materials used for blades should either be stainless steel or carbon steel.

The shovel handle is usually made of plastic or metal. The metal handles are without a doubt- much stronger and more durable but make the shovel much heavier than we would like. Deciding whether to go for plastic made handle or a metal one lies entirely to your usage, are you ok with a heavier but stronger shovel or would you want something that you can easily carry around in your Bug-out bag (B.O.B).

Shovel Design and Shape

A shovel’s design and shape usually determine how user-friendly and less complicated your survival shovel can be. One of the simplest designs would be the ones with a blade directly attached to the handle. However, there’ve been new designs that make shovels stronger, much more supportive and easier to handle. These are usually found in shovels with a T or D grip.

Another thing you should consider in the design is the length of the handle. Your best option would be to look for a shovel with adjustable handles. Most survival shovels are now foldable which make them easier to carry around

The More Features the Better

As the name suggests, the survival shovel needs to have all the options necessary for surviving different conditions and circumstances. Even though the main job of the shovel is to dig, it’s always better to be prepared and to have a multi-tool shovel at hand.

How to Keep Your Survival Shovel in Great Condition

Taking care of your shovel is vital to prevent it from rusting, maintaining the blade and keeping the handle strong and intact. You can easily follow these steps to make sure your shovel will be as strong and effective as in the day you bought it:

1)         Regularly clean the shovel from the mud and dirt and dry it. Keeping it over-night to dry is always a better option

2)         Remove any rust by using a wire brush

3)         Sharpen the shovel whenever needed

4)         Apply oil on the metal blades to prevent it from rusting

Being an outdoor enthusiast myself, I have got to say that the shovel I would want by my side whether for camping purposes or even as an emergency survival kit is the FiveJoy Military Folding Shovel Multitool (C1).

It’s multi-function, perfect size and comfortable to use for long periods of time. Even though it’s a little bit over-priced and the spade is a little bit smaller than what I would’ve originally wanted, but as a camping fella myself, I would definitely feel a lot safer to have this survival multitool shovel by my side.

The C1 is extremely tough and is designed to serve many purposes so I can easily carry it around with me everywhere or even leave it in my car as an emergency kit.
