Being prepared by having the right tools is very important. When preparing for survival scenarios, machetes are an essential tool that could save your life. A machete is a large knife-like blade mainly used to cut through things. It can also come very handy for camping or other outdoor activities.

Best Survival Machete Benefits

In many circumstances, a machete could be a good alternative to knives and axes. Depending on the length and style of the blade, the uses differ.

  • Clearing Brush and Vegetation: Machetes are really good for clearing brush, cutting through vegetation, chopping tall grass, trimming branches and clearing paths and areas.
  • Compost Chopping: Chopping compost into small pieces is very easy using a machete.
  • Wood Carving and Splitting: Using a machete is a helpful way to split wood blocks and is also good for carving.
  • Hunting and Butchering: You could use a machete for hunting wild game as well as butchering livestock.
  • Self-Defense and Combat: A machete is a life-saving tool when it comes to defending against dangerous animals and wild creatures.
  • Campsite Management: For camping, machetes are very handy for gathering firewood, clearing campsite and making shelters.
  • Slicing Fruits and Nuts: Cutting and slicing fruits and nuts is very easy with a machete, even the hardest and biggest ones. It’s also useful for harvesting crops and fruits.

What to Consider When Selecting a Tactical Machete?

Machetes have several specs and features that you should be aware of when buying one. These features determine the most suitable uses for the machete and what environment it could be used in.

Here are the most important factors to consider:

Blade Style

The most important characteristic of the machete is the shape of the blade because it determines how it can be used and what it can cut. The most popular types of machetes include:

Kukri

The kukri’s blade consists of three parts: a pointed tip is used for stabbing, a wide midsection is good for chopping and a narrow part for carving. It is commonly popular and used as an all-purpose tool.

Bush/Latin

This is the most common type of machete, it’s an evenly weighted straightback blade. It’s a multi-purpose blade, good for vegetation cutting and chopping.

Bolo

The bolo has a pointed tip to improve chopping and the blade is heavier to provide more power. It’s mainly used for harvesting crops as well as clearing vegetation.

Bowie

This blade is mainly used for hunting due to its clip-point tip which excels in skinning game.

Panga

The panga is characterized by a deep belly for chopping, a curvature to help with slicing and a tip that is useful for stabbing. It’s used for chopping and slicing brush.

Parang

Parang machetes have a thick blade and a curved shape which makes them effective for cutting thick brush and woody vegetation without getting stuck.

Length

The average length of machete blades is 18 inches and range from 10 to 28 inches. Short blades clear less area but are easy to transport while longer blades have more reach but are harder to carry.

Material

Machete blades are commonly made of either stainless steel or carbon steel. Stainless steel is more resistive to rust while carbon steel is more durable and affordable. For the highest quality and performance, carbon stainless steel has the best of both worlds but more pricey.

Handle

The handle has many shapes, sizes, and materials. It could be made out of wood, rubber, stainless steel or plastic. Try them and choose the most comfortable for you.

Tang

The tang is the part that connects the blade and the handle. You should consider a blade with a full tang that extends all the length of the machete till the end of the handle which gives more power and durability.

Weight

The weight of the machete is a compromise between power and portability. The heavier the blade, the more it will cut but the harder it will be to carry around.

Sheath

You should always have a sheath for your machete so check if yours come with one or not. It’s also better if the sheath has belt loops for carrying.

What Style Survival Machete is Best for You?

Based on the uses and features of the different machetes, here’s a breakdown of which machete type to choose considering what you’ll be using it for and what you’ll be cutting with it:

  • Clearing Brush and Vegetation: Depends on the brush you’ll go through. If it’s thin brush, it’s better to have thinner blades like the Latin or Bolo. If it’s thicker brush, you‘ll need a thicker blade like the Parang. You can also use Kukri.
  • Chopping: Heavier machetes are better for chopping work. The Bolo and Panga machetes are good options, and Parang is good for lighter chopping work.
  • Butchering: You need a machete with a thin and pointed edge like the Bowie.
  • Shaping Wood: You need a thin and light blade like a Bush or Latin machete. The Kukri is also good because its section near the handle is shaped for splicing and carving wood.
  • Survivalist or Camping: You need something all-purpose like the Kukri or Bolo.

If you’re not sure what you’ll be using your machete for, you might consider getting a multi-purpose type such as the Kukri considering its multi-function blade shape.
