Having a great miter saw around ensures that when you need to make certain cuts in wood that you will be able to do it quickly and easily. Thanks to how durable and powerful these saws are, as well as how portable they tend to be, they are a great option for anyone who is looking to cut on the go. I know that choosing the best miter saw for your use can be completely overwhelming. Because I have already done all of the research necessary to choose a great miter saw, I have put together this guide to help you make the decision about which one is right for you.
There are a few things that you need to consider when looking for a miter saw so that you can be sure you choose the right one. Not only do you need to consider the size of the saw, as this will play a huge role in what you are able to cut and how easily you can use your new saw, but you also have to consider the type of cut that you want to make.
Miter saws will vary in what they are able to cut and what they are best used for. Sliding miter saws, for example, generally have a large cut capacity, but cost more and aren’t always as durable as stationary models. They are great for decking, large framing jobs, and woodworking.
Dual-bevel miter saws, on the other hand, are great for DIYers who want to easily cut crown molding or build furniture. They make it easy to keep the orientation of the board the same way each time you cut, which can really speed up the process.
Benefits of Having a Quality Miter Saw
Miter saws come with a lot of advantages, making them great for avid DIYers and for contractors to use. One advantage is that they are generally really flexible and portable so that you can take them with you on the go. They also don’t have a lot of kick back, which will decrease the likelihood of you becoming injured when using your new saw. Beginners can really benefit from this increased safety.
Another advantage is that the miter saw allows you to make clean and very accurate cuts. This is especially true on smaller pieces of wood, other saws will not provide such a neat and clean cut, which can lower the beauty and value of your finished work.
Features to Look For
When shopping for a miter saw, I think that there are a few things that you need to be on the lookout for so that you can find the right saw for your needs. Since every saw is going to have different features, educating yourself is important.
One of the most important features are the positive stops on the saw. You want to make sure not only that you choose a miter saw with plenty of positive stops so that you can easily control what you’re cutting, but also that you can easily switch between them. Thumb-activated stops allow you to quickly and easily control your saw.
Another great feature that you will want to consider when shopping for a miter saw is a dust collection system and how much dust it will be able to capture and remove from the air. A great system will help prevent you from breathing in a lot of dust while working and will decrease the amount of cleaning that you have to do when you’re done cutting.
Beginners may be interested in opting for a miter saw that has a laser guide on it. These can make it really easy for new woodworkers or DIYers to see exactly where they are going to be cutting, which will reduce waste and frustration. If you’re not sure that you want this feature, then choose a saw that has a laser with an on/off switch.
Getting the Most Out of Your Miter Saw
Using a miter saw is fairly easy. After measuring and marking your wood, you will start by lining up the blade on one side of the mark, completely removing your hands before starting the blade. It can take a moment for the blade to come to full speed once you squeeze the switch.
When the blade has reached top speed, slowly lower it through the board until the cut is complete, and then turn off the blade. Wait for it to stop moving before raising it, as this will prevent you from accidentally cutting yourself or making another, unintentional, cut in the wood that you have been working on.
Even though the miter saw is relatively safe to use, you still have to be careful when using it to make sure that you don’t get injured. I recommend that you make sure that all guards are in place before turning on your saw, and never wear loose clothing or jewelry that could get caught in the blade.
Additionally, use both ear and eye protection at all times, even if you are only making one or two small cuts. Finally, always take the time needed to clamp or hold all material securely when you’re cutting so that it doesn’t slip out of your hands.
