What to Look for in a Solar Powered Security Camera
Weather Protection and IP
Whether you’re using your security camera indoors or outdoors, it’s vital to have it protected from severe weather and water spills. IP is an acronym for ‘ International Protection’ rate which reveals how protected your device is. It usually consists of two digits, the first one shows solids protection and the second one shows liquids protection. Here are charts to explain more the significance of each number.
A camera’s resolution affects the display and print sizes of the recordings. The higher the resolution, the clearer the image will be when displayed on large screens and when printed on a large scale. Thus you get clearer features of any intruder.
There are two types of motion sensors:
Active Motion Sensors
Those are radar-based sensors emitting ultrasonic sound waves which the sensor reflects. When these waves are interrupted the sensor reacts by sending signals which sound the alarm or open gates.
Passive Motion Sensors
Those are mostly used at home security systems and they are also called passive infrared motion detectors (PIR). They detect the heat or the infrared energy emitted by humans and animals. When the sensor detects an increased infrared energy/ heat it sounds the alarm.
Some cameras have both types of motion sensors like the Soliom S60 reviewed below.
For more information about motion sensors, watch this video.
Local Storage for Recordings
It’s quite crucial for cameras to have the ability to save recordings internally or locally, mainly for security reasons. Some people fear that someone might hack their accounts and gain access to their recordings thus posing a security threat. Moreover, if for some reason your internet connection goes down, you’d still need those recordings saved somewhere to review later. Therefore, look for cameras that have a built-in slot for SD cards.
Night vision Solar Powered Security Cameras
Night vision cameras and other devices use three types of technology:
Starlight Technology and Digital Night Vision
Both are used by most security cameras. They simply work by amplifying the existing starlight or any dim light nearby. Therefore, cameras using these technologies don’t work in really dark, moonless nights unless IR illumination is around.
As the name suggests, it works by capturing the heat emitted from humans and animals.
For more information about night vision technology read this article.
Now that you know so much about security cameras, let me narrow down the choices for your convenience to the best solar powered security cameras.

Solar Powered Security Surveillance Camera Wrap Up
For me, the winner of all these solar security cameras is the Argus Pro camera for many reasons. First of all, it’s quite affordable and would suit most budgets. Other than that, it has all the features I’m personally looking for in a security camera. It’s easy to set up without having to deal with tens of tangled chords.
It can record captured videos locally on a built-in SD card or on the Reolink Cloud. I’m able to adjust the sensitivity of the motion sensor and the fun part is I’m able to record my own voice telling intruders off (seriously, this is such a cool camera feature). In addition to this, I can talk and listen to the person on the other side of the camera in real time. So I can ask delivery guys to wait or leave the packages by the gate and hear them if they need my signature or anything else.
Depending on if you are looking for a great outdoor or indoor camera, you are certain to get the performance you need with one of my recommended solar security cameras. With a wireless install, motion sensing and night vision capabilities, most of these cameras will fit the bill.
