UPS Battery Backup Buying Guide
A UPS is one of the most important additions to your home or office. There are many types of UPS systems out there to choose from.
To make things easier for you, we’ve put together this quick guide to choosing the best battery backup.
Why You Should Buy A UPS System
Whether you’re considering buying a battery backup for your home or office, it’s definitely a great choice because good quality UPS should provide you with a surge protector, a battery backup, and a voltage regulator.
Here are a few reasons why we think buying a UPS is essential.
Fluctuations in the power supply of your devices may cause severe damage to them without you even noticing. What a UPS does is that it provides you with a voltage regulator that adjusts the power to your device. That way you don’t have to worry about any inconsistency in your power supply because the UPS will automatically fix it.
A UPS battery is a simple and effective way to avoid losing precious data. In this case, the backup battery will give you enough time to save your data and turn off your device in the correct way.
While most average battery backups give you enough time to save data and turn off devices to avoid damage, some extra powerful battery backups can keep workstations running for some time. These battery backups can be of great use to keep home medical equipment operating for some time.
How To Select The Best UPS Battery Backup
Choosing a UPS battery backup is a lot more simple than it seems. Here are some things to consider when buying one.
The first factor you need to consider is which devices you’ll use the battery with. Check the requirements of your devices first and choose a battery that matches it.
If you’re unsure about how many watts your device requires, you can always contact the manufacturer or check the user manual to find out.
Runtime is the number of minutes that the battery can keep your devices running during a blackout. Obviously, the minimum runtime should be enough to turn off your devices safely.
The nature of the device you intend on using the battery backup with and on how long you wish to keep it running are two important factors to consider. Some UPS batteries will only run for a few minutes while others will keep going for hours.
How many devices do you want to connect to the battery? Some battery backups can handle only two devices while others can withstand up to twelve devices.
It’s always better to buy a UPS battery with more outlets than you need. So let’s say you intend of hooking up eight devices to your battery, buying one that can connect ten devices will give you more flexibility.
If you’re going to use the battery backup at home or at your office only, then portability shouldn’t be an issue for you. However, if you intend on taking the battery with you if you’re traveling, for instance, then you’ll want to consider a battery that is compact and easy to move around.
The battery component of the UPS needs to be replaced from time to time. Check how long the battery will last before it requires a replacement. Usually, batteries will last from three to five years.
Also, it’s important to consider the replacement cost and the availability of the battery.
